ESA Conference 2014 – Amsterdam

The European Society for Aesthetics would like to invite you to attend the ESA Conference 2014. The conference will be co-organised by the ESA and the Department of Philosophy, University of Amsterdam, and will take place in Amsterdam from the 29th of May (morning) until the 31st of May 2014 (late afternoon).

Programme/
We will have both systematic and historical presentations of papers from different traditions and on a large variety of topics in philosophical aesthetics. This year, there will also be a special session addressing “The Age of Aesthetics”, i.e. the period between 1750, the publication of Baumgarten’s ‘Aesthetica’, and 1831, Hegel’s death, and in particular addressing why this period was so productive for aesthetics and/or what this suggests for the prospects of the discipline in our own time.

Venue & Travel/
The conference takes place in the building of the Department of Theater Studies of the Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA) in the Nieuwe Doelenstraat 16. (“Nieuw” means “new”, and “Doelen” means “goals” or “purposes”, and it is pronounced with a “u”.)
The building is located in the centre of old Amsterdam, in a neighborhood where almost all the departments of the Humanities are to be found. Thus, it is a part of the ordinary city life, and you can find a lot of restaurants and cafés there. We will provide more information on gastronomy at the conference.
To go to Nw. Doelenstraat by public transport you can take the tram. If you start at the Centraal Station it’s just two stops. You take off the tram at “Muntplein”, where the flower market is located as well. You will see a big hotel (“De L’Europe”), and that’s the beginning of the Nw. Doelenstraat.
You can also consider renting a bicycle during your stay (you can do this, for example, at the Centraal Station), especially in case your hotel is somewhat further away from the old centre. (Taxis are very expensive in Amsterdam; not as expensive as in Stockholm, but not as cheap as in Berlin.)
Accommodation/
Since there seems to be a run on the hotels of Amsterdam for end of May, we advise you to book a hotel as soon as possible. We could not make special arrangements with a hotel, so please have a look at the hotel website of Amsterdam. Unfortunately it is not easy to find hotels that offer rooms for a price below 100 EUR. However, some do have offers (around 70 EUR) if you pay in advance and accept that you will not receive any refund in case you have to cancel your trip to Amsterdam.
